4D-Animation.

'Self portrait'

To warm up before the tasks ahead I was asked to make a turnaround, four framed self portrait'. Naturally only two of the frames are me and the other two are of my pets. I was really happy with how this turned out considering it only took me an hour or two.

I created all these gifs frame by frame in procreate on my iPad. I thoroughly enjoyed the process which was a pleasant surprise and im now looking forward to the rest of this unit even more. I think these gifs where a lovely warmup for what's to come.

Making a title sequence.

I had to pick a genre of films/shows from a list I was given. I was instantly drawn to the superhero cliché. I really enjoy the idea of coming up with a superhero to create an intro for. I feel I could be really playful with this idea, initially I think superhero films intros are

YA SciFi TV series
Probably adapted from a popular book series where the world/galaxy/realm can only be saved by a seemingly normal teenager who is surprised to discover that they've got amazing powers & skills
Here I gathered some intros that I liked the look of. I watched a whole bunch of them but these were some of my favourite, Id love to give a similar feel to the spiderman intros the most as I love spiderman and ive always enjoyed the very bright and poppy

My main character.

here was my first rough idea for my hero. I wasn't too sure about how she looked though as she seems more of a dark and edgy character whereas I want a little more pop. I started the idea of her powers being able to shoot lasers from her hands and sonic booms from her mouth.

After doing some research into what animals use echolocation I found the swiftlets. A very cute species of cave bird that use echolocation to see in the dark. They use clicking sounds that people can hear and I thought this would be a pretty cool idea to take on for my hero.

Possible songs.

Personally its much easier for me to work with a song already in mind rather than adding it afterwards. I had a couple initial songs come to mind such as below.

Rough thumbnails.

Mixed media background.

Inspired by the mixed media backgrounds in the intros I looked at, I decided to create some traditional abstract paintings to use for my background at the start and throughout my intro. I had fun working a little abstract for once, I also really like how it looked behing the beginning of my animation.

Final design.

I wanted the main drawing of her to start out as a sketch and then be coloured digitally. I am pleased with how this finished in the end as I managed to keep the papers texture throughout.

Animating from life

I decided the most logical approach to some of my scenes was to base them from photographs. I took these pictures of my hands for example, to base the laser part at the beginning from.

I decided to come up with fake names rather than using celebrities, it seemed to add another layer of complexity to the task at hand considering who would play whatever roles.

I am most proud of the ending, I transitioned from the cheesy superhero punch to the also cheesy newspaper title. I used the transform tool to make it look as though the newspaper landed in the puddle.

Final video.

I am very happy with how this turned out in the end, I love the bright colours and use of mixed media I incorporated. I think the style jumps around a bit but it matches the messy mixed media style.
