Colour and composition

Colour pallets.

Picture
This palette was originally a personality test at the Bauhaus, Apparenly what colours you made (from the primary colours)  represented your personality and you as a person in general.
This is how my test turned out and I am pretty happy with the results. I wasn't too sure about the whole personality part but after asking a few of my peers apparently this represented me rather nicely.

Yvonne Gilbert is an English illustrator that has had a large impact on the illustration world with her fantasy themed illustrations.
She works in fine detail with coloured pencils and is most likely the most popular artist right now to work with this medium as it isn't as popular with professional illustrators anymore.

While looking at her work I decided to explore   coloured pencils myself. Inspired by her very   detailed and magical garden pieces I drew and   coloured a ladybird. I am beyond happy with how   this turned out and am looking forward to using   the medium to draw one of my final book jackets.
I am going to look at this work for inspiration with the childrens   book design.

Charles keeping.

Charles Keeping was an English illustrator that lived from 1924 till 1988 in London. His illustrations ranged from children suitable to more gory horror pointed towards a much older audience.
He worked mainly in ink and watercolour and would like to work on different grounds to make certain effects with the paint/ink. He would paint on shiny paper for example and let the ink pool and dry to leave it looking shiny and uneven.
I really like how his work has an abstract feel to it. The majority of the things he illustrates are in proportion but are distorted in such a way to make them creepy.

Brad Holland.

Born in 1943, this famous American artist works with acrylic paints. He uses a dry brush with the tiniest bit of acrylic paint and stabs at the paper to create these beautifully soft and fluffy illustrations. Back when he was big in the game Holland was mostly known for regularly illustrating for playboy. Brads personal work however is much more surreal as you can see below.

The tree.

For this task I had to design three book covers with the same title: The Tree.
Each one in a different style and medium also, inspired by the three artists I looked at previously.

Here were my thumbnails for the children's book. As I was taking inspiration from Yvonne Gilbert I wanted to make the scenes busy. This is why I preferred the two thumbnails on the far right the most. The idea was to make the picture busy with leaves, butterflies and flowers, possibly some fairies too as her work also includes a lot of fairy tale inspired imagery.
For the science fiction covers I mainly thought of looking at space. I quite liked how the strange coloured trees looked but decided to go with the floating tree in the end as I found it more mysterious and intriguing to look at.

I think I struggled with the horror ideas the most. I wasn't too sure how to incorporate a tree as the main subject of a horror book. These are the 5/6 ideas I ended up with. The strongest, and by far my favourite.
