Week 1 - Drawing

W Heath Robinson.

I love the level of detail in this 1900s artists work. He was well known for drawing 'whimsical' drawings pf contraptions with plenty of detail but honestly I prefer his character drawings like this more.

Dip pen.

Here was my very first attempt at life drawing and dip pen of the semester. I decided to sketch Charlie having a doodle in his own sketchbook, The proportions of his face can use work but I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I'm hoping to become more comfortable with strange angles of people faces and faces in general as this unit goes on.
I tried to use composition here by focusing on one side of the page and using a wobbly frame, along with only a thin outline

Fine liner and crosshatching.

Crumpled sweet wrapper, over a double page spread.

I used heavy crosshatching on this still life drawing of a cat head ornament. I am very happy with how it turned out although I feel I can make much improvement still. I plan on drawing this cat again in different styles and media.
Picture
First successful self portrait. I used a wobbly frame with my brush pen and then continued to use crosshatching to shade the face. I found less is more with this drawing and the tea stain I added to the page previously really adds to the effect.

This is a drawing of my curtains in the living room with little ghost lights that are hung up. I'm fairly happy with how this turned out as I find the crosshatching is some of my best yet.

We had the challenge of creating a 'brush' out of something unusual. So I ripped up a receipt and rolled it up before holding it together with a bobble and pen. I dipped this into ink and attempted to draw the cup in front of me.
I'm not too keen on the outcome but the process what pretty fun, I liked how loose and messy it felt while doing it.

Week 2 - 3D illustration.

Picture
After our first lecture on 3D illustration we were challenged to go back to our desks and to create something with the found objects we brought in within an hour or two. I decided to make a dog jumping into this empty noodle pot1 And with that Pickle the dog was born!
I find this quick piece very cute and playful,
This little fella is just a cat I made out of an old tape roll and some foam. simple but cute.

This boy was made primarily out of tinfoil, I covered parts of him with tissue, masking tape, wool and, well you get the idea. scraps! That's what I decided to call him, I wanted to try and capture a hyper dog rolling in a muddy puddle and I think I did rather well.

These little cat totems I made out of air dry clay then painted with acrylics. I think they turned out very cute although seem a little 'stiff' and don't portray enough character like the initial task asked.
This boy is a rather large paper Mache cat I was making out of recycled materials. I wanted to make him look proud but unfortunately time seem to slip and I didn't quite get him finished.

Challenge: Mask.

Picture
I was challenged in the space of about and hour to create a mask that represented me, this is what I ended up with.

Admittedly this was a bit of a fail. I find it a little amusing how messy it is though.
The initial idea was how my thoughts are usually buzzing around like bees, very busy and at times overwhelming so I decided trying to make a beehive with bees surrounding it.

Here's a few of the kind of artists I follow on Instagram. I am very inspired by Instagram artists. It feels like this is the new way of discovering artists to look upto.
These few in particular use either watercolour or acrylic so I thought it was rather fitting to look at.
Here are a few images from artists that use watercolour and acrylic on their work that I follow on Instagram. I was

Watercolour

Here's three self portraits I did on three separate days. The first two were made with photographs and the last was done only using a mirror. I think the middle painting is my favourite as its closest to reality but (although the eyes are too big) I'm proud of the last portrait as it was done from a mirror.
Picture
This painting of Charlie is my favourite by far. I painted this very quickly and honestly I'm proud of the proportions and shading. This is probably my most successful portrait watercolour so far and i'm incredibly happy with it.
Picture
This painting here was a quick study of a little snake plant I own and cat figure I made for the 3d section of this unit.
although this is only a quick study without much detail I'm happy with he believability of it.

Acrylic

I'm not entirely proud of this painting but I wanted to attempt something on a very large scale. I taped a large roll of brown paper to my bedroom door then using only the mirror hung up besides me attempted a self portrait.
I'm not soo sure its believable but the exercise was fun to do.

I am very proud of this acrylic  portrait. Its of my friend matt and is again probably one of the most successful acrylic portraits I've done.
His skin tone is pretty warm and I think I captured it nicely, I'm also impressed with my proportions of the face. I feel I've improved a lot this semester and I'm happy with my improvements. I will keep working on drawing faces in my personal time I think as I've really enjoyed this.
Below are a couple of acrylic painting studies from life I did, Id have liked to have done more but im pretty hapy with how these turned out.

Digital painting.

Although it wasn't part of the brief I wanted to give digital painting a go, So using the brush textures in procreate to 'paint' rather than draw. I really like how different both of these look too.
