Sketchbook

Sketchbooks, initial research.

Dwayne Bell
Chris Ware
Lucinda Rogers
This was the first page I completed in this sketchbook. It was just of things I could see and I decided to share it here. The improvement I make throughout this book is easy to see when compared to the first two pages.

I found this artist firstly through her YouTube video that I showed above. I then had a look at her Instagram and found hundreds of urban sketching images.

I love the use of  watercolour wash and loose lines in this artists work. Even though his work is so lovely I noticed he didn't have that large of a following so I decided to comment on his latest post in the hopes he would respond, he did!

What I gathered from his two comments was to not spend too long on the sketch, or the drawing all together that is. And to look for simple and interesting buildings and streets to start out with.
Here's some of my own urban sketching.
Picture
This drawing was an unfortunate one as I decided to start drawing the neighbours house a little too late, it got darker as I drew so along did the drawing! as the sun was setting and the shadows got darker so did my inking. Eventually the street lamp in front of the window turned on, it looked distorted through my bedroom window so I wanted to capture that. I used a white pen to add light over the dark and I love the abstract feel of it, not sure it fits into urban sketching as nicely as id have liked but I still enjoy the drawing itself.

The two drawings below were my second attempt at drawing in the wild, The first unfortunately didn't go as well as Id have liked so I moved location to the park, I tried using the advice and simplified my view.. I much prefer how this looks.
I would've added more detail if I could have sat longer on location that day.

Here Is where I started to really roll with advice of making things more simple for myself. I added frames and didn't worry too much about how straight my lines are, Even though the building are straight in real life my depiction looks off and becomes far too difficult if I try to copy this line from line.

Perhaps I drew the cars and building a little too simple in the drawing on the right, Ill keep this in mind for future. I am however happy with the perspective, although simplified I feel I am starting to get the hang of a vanishing point.

The drawings were either drawn at uni or of people at the pub. it was pretty difficult to hide the fact I was drawing people from them but fun to do none of the less.

These drawings were done on the trip to the lakes comic book festival. The first being in the bus and the next two while waiting for food at pizza express.
