For this project I have been asked to make a 'protest pack' for whatever I feel strongly about. It must be available to access online for anyone to use to join in on the protest! Originally my brain swayed towards fighting the climate crisis but I don't think my brain could deal with focusing on that for a few weeks, especially with the big deadline of the year looming! So I thought more about what really bugs me, something that makes me angry but doesn't necessarily make me sad. Then it hit me. Modern art. During the Easter break I visited a modern art museum in Edinburgh and something about it just makes my blood boil, not all of it is bad but most of it isn't necessarily good and why do these artists get a place on the wall and recognition for what they do but us illustrators don't?
Originally, as shown above, I was planning on taking on the whole idea around illustrators not getting enough credit but admittedly that is biting off a lot more than I can chew, especially in the short deadline given. After having a 1 to 1 with my tutor I decided to turn my attention towards a small part of the problem instead. People expecting free art.
Ive decided to make a digital protest pack to try and help solve a digital problem, this will include four gifs starting out as a polite decline and hopefully ending in a rude digital 'piss off'. The idea is that artists wherever they may be can copy the link to these gifs and use them in response to people asking/expecting art for free.
'Jonarton'
I was pretty curious to see if anyone else had try to tackle this problem and after a quick google I discovered this artist. He was dealing with people asking to draw art for free. He would badly doodle them and send it back, usually upsetting the person and amusing his followers in the process. After growing in popularity for using humour to deal with this issue he started to ask people to donate to charity for a dumb doodle in return. Technically he's still working for free but has raised so much money for charity in the process that I thought it was worth a mention.
I wanted to have a look at gifs before I had a go at making them myself, I have made gifs in the past but usually with no prior plan at all. Heres a couple examples of the ones that stood out to me most on giphy:
I really like the look of watercolour textures and just textures in general in these gifs. They stand out to me much more than all of the basic flat digital ones did. I may still make a flat gif or two but I will take forward the idea of a watercolour texture also I think the more organic gifs are much more fun to look at.
The final gifs.
This is my first draft of the initial ' polite' gif. I really like how its turned out but after showing a tutor it was shown to me how the gif could benefit with the words having a better layout. Seen as though its a gif why not use that to my advantage and space out the information better?
Finally my favourite gif out of them all. it unfortunately took me four and a half hours to complete and that's why it isn't as coloured as the others but I still really like it. The idea is that its blunt and rude, for people that are sick of others trying to exploit their skills for free work.
