What does your clothing say about you?In my first History & Practice session we discussed how a piece of clothing can reflect the culture in which it was created. Everything that goes into designing, making and wearing different clothing makes it a cultural text. For example, you can clearly differentiate between 60's fashion and 80's fashion based of the pattern of clothing and colours alone. Clothing is a type of cultural text and whether people realise it or not what we wear reflects our personalities and how we feel. When we get dressed in the morning it is a very conscious decision on how we present ourselves that day, this can be influenced by mood, where we live and the latest trends too. When you meet a new person for the first time, your first impression is usually based around how they present themselves. For example if a person is wearing a black suit you may think they're smart, formal and ready for work whereas if you met a person in baggy jeans and an old t-shirt you would see them as more relaxed and informal. Here are my rough notes made during the lecture : Here is my look at a piece of my own clothing : I have decided to look at my denim jacket in further detail for this task as I have had it for a fair few years now and it means more to me now then it did when I first bought it. I was compelled to buy this jacket as it fit me so nicely straight away and was very of a very good quality.
Denim jackets have been in fashion for around 130 years now, They were originally designed for laborious work and was known for that. Around the 50's Denim jackets took a turn to become more of a fashion statement then workwear and was usually worn by teenage rebels, It was almost like a symbol of a teenage individuality. They were even banned in some schools as it was against uniform regulations. In the 60's Denim jackets were known to be popular in the rock an roll world and even amongst big stars. By the 80's Denim jackets had definitely took another leap towards being a fashion statement. The shoulders become more boxy and large and rips where starting to be introduced, definitely more fashion then function at this point. This jacket in particular was made by the brand Lee, which is a very well known brand for specifically selling denim. This fact alone influenced my purchase also. I always wanted a Denim jacket as I wanted somewhere to place my enamel pins. I feel as though my pins give my jacket much more personality and individuality, this is why I like my jacket so much. I think Denim jackets are so popular as they're still a statement for individuality, Not two jackets are the same if worn correctly. Just like me many people add pins and even as of recent, paint and draw on their jackets. Recent trends show people upcycling old Jackets and therefore making them ultimately and always trendy.
